          <bold>Abstract</bold>
        </p>
        <p>The genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> comprises a diverse group of vesper bats with worldwide distribution. Twenty-eight neotropical species are currently recognized. Based on a morphological approach, we describe a new species of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from the Uruguayan Pampas grasslands, an ecoregion under high anthropogenic pressure with a largely unknown bat fauna. Qualitative and quantitative morphological analyses support the recognition of the new species and we present a set of external and cranial diagnostic characters by comparing them with other neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species. The new species reassembles <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, but can be distinguished by a set of qualitative and quantitative morphological traits, including its clearly bicolored dorsal fur, tricolored ventral fur, a pelage on the dorsal surface of uropatagium, sagittal crest lower, braincase lower in lateral view and overall smaller size.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
      <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Kaup, 1829 comprises a diverse and worldwide distributed genus of vesper bats with ca. 140 species recognized (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Moratelli et al. 2019a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">b</xref>; MDD 2021). Despite the high diversity, species have reduced phenotypic variation and conspicuously conserved morphology compared to most of the other genera of vesper bats (Gunnell et al. 2012; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Moratelli et al. 2019a</xref>). Therefore, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is among the most difficult genera of bats to delimit species based on morphology only. However, several neotropical species whose evidence was based solely on morphology have been confirmed by subsequent molecular assessments, such as the cases of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lavali">lavali</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Moratelli, Peracchi, Dias &amp; Oliveira, 2011 from the South American dry Diagonal, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="larensis">larensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> LaVal, 1973 from Venezuela (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Moratelli et al. 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Novaes et al. 2021</xref>). Even <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="diminutus">diminutus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Moratelli &amp; Wilson, 2011, whose description was based on one subadult individual, was confirmed as a distinct lineage based on molecular evidence (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Platt et al. 2018</xref>).</p>
      <p>New World <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> form a monophyletic group divided into two clades with strong biogeographic associations, one Nearctic and the other predominantly Neotropical (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">Stadelmann et al. 2007</xref>). Based on the congruence between molecular and morphological data, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Moratelli et al. (2019a)</xref> recognized four groups of species. Among them, the lucifugus and vivesi groups are restricted to the Nearctic region; the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group is predominantly neotropical, but with a few nearctic species; and the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group is restricted to the Neotropics.</p>
      <p>Currently, 28 species of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> are recognized from the Neotropics (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Moratelli et al. 2019a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">2019b</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Carrión-Bonilla and Cook 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Novaes et al. 2021</xref>). However, phylogenetic studies have identified at least 35 independent evolutionary lineages and paraphyletic species, showing that at least 20% of the diversity of neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> comprise undescribed species (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Clare et al. 2007</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Larsen et al. 2012</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Chaverri et al. 2016</xref>), which is also supported by systematic reviews based on morphological data (e.g., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Moratelli et al. 2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Moratelli and Wilson 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Novaes et al. 2018</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">2021</xref>).</p>
      <p>Currently, the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group is composed of eight species restricted to the Neotropics: <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (É. Geoffroy, 1806), <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="simus">simus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Thomas, 1901, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="keaysi">keaysi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> J.A. Allen, 1914, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Handley, 1960, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="elegans">elegans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Hall, 1962, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pilosatibialis">pilosatibialis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> LaVal, 1973, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="midastactus">midastactus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Moratelli &amp; Wilson 2014, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="armiensis">armiensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Carrión-Bonilla &amp; Cook, 2020 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Moratelli et al. 2013</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">2019a</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Carrión-Bonilla and Cook 2020</xref>). However, morphological and molecular evidence indicate that the species diversity in the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group may be underestimated (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Clare et al. 2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Moratelli and Wilson 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Novaes et al. 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Carrión-Bonilla and Cook 2020</xref>).</p>
      <p>During a taxonomic revision of neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, we identified a sample of 15 specimens from the Uruguayan Pampa grasslands with a unique set of qualitative and quantitative characters that distinguish them from all South American congeners currently recognized. Based on the morphological discontinuity, we hypothesize that this sample comprises a new species, which we describe and compare with neotropical congeners.</p>
    </sec>
    <sec sec-type="methods" id="SECID0EKIAC">
      <title>Methods</title>
      <p>This research is part of a critical review of neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and material examined comprises more than 7,500 specimens covering all neotropical species currently recognized, including their primary types, and comparative series from different localities. The 15 specimens from the Uruguayan Pampa grasslands that represent the putative new species were collected in 1963, and are deposited at the American Museum of Natural History, USA. Due to the absence of fresh tissue samples or DNA sequences available in biological collections and DNA libraries, respectively, we restricted our analyses to qualitative and quantitative morphological comparisons.</p>
      <p>Comparative analyses were based on 15 specimens of the putative new species of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from Uruguay, and other 720 specimens from 15 neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species deposited in 19 scientific collections from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Switzerland, and United States (Appendix <xref ref-type="app" rid="app1">1</xref>).       <p>The intra and interspecific morphological variation was evaluated from qualitative and quantitative analyses based on adults (classified as such based on closed epiphyses; see <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Brunet-Rossini and Wilkinson 2009</xref>). Qualitative traits employed here to characterize and distinguish species follow <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Moratelli et al. (2013)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Novaes et al. (2021)</xref>. Capitalized color nomenclature follows <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Ridgway (1912)</xref>.</p>
      <p>External measurements, including the total length (TL), tail length (TL), hind foot length (<abbrev xlink:title="hind foot length" id="ABBRID0EWPAC">HF</abbrev>), ear length (<abbrev xlink:title="ear length" id="ABBRID0E1PAC">EL</abbrev>), and body mass (<abbrev xlink:title="body mass" id="ABBRID0E5PAC">BM</abbrev>), were recorded from skin labels, and reported to the nearest millimeter and to the nearest gram.       <p>Discriminant Function Analysis (<abbrev xlink:title="Discriminant Function Analysis" id="ABBRID0EFLAE">DFA</abbrev>), performed in the R software (R Development Core Team 2008), with the Mass (Vanables and Ripley 2002) and Lattice (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Sarkar 2008</xref>) packages, was used in order to characterize and discriminate samples. We selected a subset of the cranial dimensions (<abbrev xlink:title="greatest length of skull" id="ABBRID0ENLAE">GLS</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="condylo-incisive length" id="ABBRID0ERLAE">CIL</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="mastoid breadth" id="ABBRID0EVLAE">MAB</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="braincase breadth" id="ABBRID0EZLAE">BCB</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="postorbital breadth" id="ABBRID0E4LAE">POB</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="interorbital breadth" id="ABBRID0EBMAE">IOB</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="breadth across canines" id="ABBRID0EFMAE">BAC</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="breadth across molars" id="ABBRID0EJMAE">BAM</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="maxillary toothrow length" id="ABBRID0ENMAE">MTL</abbrev>, M1-3, <abbrev xlink:title="mandibular toothrow length" id="ABBRID0ERMAE">MAN</abbrev>, <abbrev xlink:title="mandibular lengt" id="ABBRID0EVMAE">MAL</abbrev>) representing different axes of length and width of skull, rostrum, and mandible. Multivariate analyses require complete datasets, thus, the missing values (&lt; 5% of total dataset) were estimated from the existing raw data using the Amelia II package (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Honaker et al. 2011</xref>) implemented in R software. Measurements were transformed to natural logs and covariance matrices were computed considering all variables. <abbrev xlink:title="Discriminant Function Analysis" id="ABBRID0E4MAE">DFA</abbrev> was run with 15 selected individuals of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. from Uruguay, considering that these species have similar morphology and occurs in the Southern Cone.</p>
    </sec>
    <sec sec-type="Results" id="SECID0E5NAE">
      <title>Results</title>
      <p>The sample from Uruguay that represents the putative new species (hereafter refered as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. from Uruguay) can be distinguished from all South American congeners, except <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, by the following set of traits: small to medium sized species (<abbrev xlink:title="forearm length" id="ABBRID0EBPAE">FA</abbrev> 33.8–36.3 mm; <abbrev xlink:title="greatest length of skull" id="ABBRID0EFPAE">GLS</abbrev> 13.4–14.6 mm); comparatively long wooly dorsal fur subtly bicolored; skull with very low sagittal crest and braincase roof not inclined forward. Although <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has a overall larger size than <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov from Uruguay (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>), the smallest specimens of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> may resemble the largest specimens of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov.</p>

      <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. from Uruguay can be confused with <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. However, it can be distinguished by the presence of a fur formed of scattered hairs on the dorsal surface of uropatagium that does not extend beyond the level of the knees; narrower and elongated skull, with less robust appearance; sagittal crest lower; mastoid processes comparatively narrower and practically not visible in dorsal view; braincase lower in lateral view; and posterior region of the braincase more rounded and well projected beyond the posterior limit of the occipital condyles (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>). <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. from Uruguay has bicolored dorsal fur, with a grayish-brown base and reddish tip, with a burned aspect (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>). The ventral fur is tricolored, which is unique among neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, with medium-brown base, middle portion light gray, and yellowish tip. Analyzing the type series of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, the dorsal fur is unicolored medium or reddish-brown, whereas the ventral fur is bicolored, with dark-brown bases and pale-yellow tips (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>). <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has a reddish dorsal fur with a slightly darker base, while the venter is bicolored, with medium-brown base and bright-yellow tip (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>).</p>

      <p>In the <abbrev xlink:title="Discriminant Function Analysis" id="ABBRID0E5IAG">DFA</abbrev>, the 1st discriminant function, more related with the skull size, represented 93% of the total variation, whereas the 2nd discriminant function, more related with the skull shape, represented 7% (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>). Along the 1<sup>st</sup> axis, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. overlapped, indicating similar skull sizes, and both do not overlap with <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>). <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. from Uruguay and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> were retrieved with full overlap along the first axis (related to skull size), but there was a partial segregation of these taxa along the second axis (more related to skull shape). This analysis relied mainly on measurements related to skull and mandibular length, and braincase breadth (Figure <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>). Linear measurements reveal that <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. is slightly smaller than <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> in relation to both skull and external measurements and consistently smaller than <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>).</p>
      <p>The set of qualitative morphological characters and the partial distinction of the skull shape evidenced by the <abbrev xlink:title="Discriminant Function Analysis" id="ABBRID0ECMAG">DFA</abbrev> support the full distinction of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. from Uruguay compared to their more similar congeners and other South American <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. We present here the description of the new species from the Uruguayan Pampas, including a morphological diagnosis and comparisons with the other neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species.</p>

        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="distribution" id="SECID0E1TAG">
          <title>Distribution and habitat.</title>
          <p>Known from only two localities in the provinces of Artigas and Tacuarembó, Uruguay (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F6">6</xref>). The records come from the Uruguayan Pampas, between 30 and 240 m in altitude. The region is characterized by grassland plains with shrubby vegetation patches typical of subtropical landscapes. However, the margins of rivers can present denser riparian forests, with arborescent ferns, orchids, lianas and several trees with more than 10 m in height (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Sganga 1994</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Panario et al. 2011</xref>). According to information available on museum labels, most individuals were captured with mist-nets near watercourses.</p>

        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="etymology" id="SECID0EEVAG">
          <title>Etymology.</title>
          <p>We name <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> after the Pampas ecoregion, the main habitat occurrence for the species. Pampa is a Quechua word for “plain”, and in Latin languages it is used in the masculine gender, which agrees with the generic name <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, also masculine (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">ICZN 1958</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Pritchard 1994</xref>).</p>
        </tp:treatment-sec>
        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="diagnosis" id="SECID0EEWAG">
          <title>Diagnosis.</title>
          <p>The tricolored ventral fur, with a Drab basal band, Smoke Gray middle band, and yellowish (generally Naples Yellow) tip is unique among South American <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. In addition, the following set of traits distinguishes <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from all its South American congeners: small to medium sized species (<abbrev xlink:title="forearm length" id="ABBRID0E3WAG">FA</abbrev> 33.8–36.3 mm; sagittal crest absent or very low; elongated skull (<abbrev xlink:title="greatest length of skull" id="ABBRID0EAXAG">GLS</abbrev> 13.4–14.4 mm); braincase not inflated and low in profile; braincase roof formed by the parietal bone strongly straight and not inclined forward; frontal bone steeply sloped towards the rostrum; posterior region of the braincase rounded and projected beyond the limit of the occipital condyles; mastoid processes narrower and practically not visible in dorsal view; dorsal fur notably long (7–9 mm), woolly and bicolored, with tips Dresden Brown or paler Ochraceous-Tawny, and bases brownish-gray (giving a fuliginous aspect); ventral fur moderately long (6–7 mm); legs and dorsal surface of the uropatagium covered by scattered fur that extends up to the knees; plagiopatagium inserted into the foot by a broad band of membrane.</p>
        </tp:treatment-sec>
        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="description" id="SECID0EEXAG">
          <title>Morphological description and comparisons.</title>
          <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is a small to medium species of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (<abbrev xlink:title="forearm length" id="ABBRID0E3XAG">FA</abbrev> 33.8–36.3 mm; other measurements in Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>) and the fur texture (wooly) and cranial morphology (broad skull with sagittal and lambdoidal crests presents) resembles species allocated to the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group (<italic>q.v</italic>., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Moratelli et al. 2013</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">2019a</xref>). Ears are Mummy Brown and comparatively medium sized (<abbrev xlink:title="ear length" id="ABBRID0EXYAG">EL</abbrev> 11–14 mm), reaching the portion of the rostrum between the eyes and nostrils when extended forward. Tragus is long and slender, with a wide base and a narrower spear-shaped terminal half, almost straight anterior edge, and rounded tip. Membranes are Mummy Brown; the dorsal surface of tibia, and uropatagium has scattered hairs extending to the level of the knees. The uropatagium lacks the fringe of hairs along the trailing edge. The plagiopatagium is attached to the foot at the level of the toes by a broad band of membrane.</p>
          <p>Dorsal and ventral fur are wooly and long (<abbrev xlink:title="length of dorsal fur" id="ABBRID0E4YAG">LDF</abbrev> 7–9 mm, <abbrev xlink:title="length of ventral fur" id="ABBRID0EBZAG">LVF</abbrev> 6–7 mm). The dorsal pelage is bicolored with brownish-gray bases (3/4 of the total fur length) and reddish tips (1/4 of the total fur length), ranging from Dresden Brown to paler Ochraceous-Tawny. The dorsal fur has a coloration that looks like the bat is partially covered by soot and with the tip of the hairs burned. The ventral fur is tricolored, with Drab bases (1/4 of the total fur length) progressively turning Smoke Gray in the middle band (2/4 length) and light-yellow tips (1/4 [ranging from Naples Yellow to Cream-Buff]). The tricolored ventral fur is unique among all South American <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>). However, this pattern may be less evident in some lighter specimens, where the coloration of the middle band may be confused with the tip band of the hairs.</p>
          <p>Dental formula is I 2/3, C 1/1, PM 3/3, M 3/3 = 38, typical of all New World species of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. Skull delicate and medium-sized in length (<abbrev xlink:title="greatest length of skull" id="ABBRID0EZZAG">GLS</abbrev> 13.1–14.1 mm), resembling <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group species. The 2nd upper premolar (P3) is in the toothrow, not displaced to the lingual side and smaller than first upper premolar (P2). The 1st lower molar (m1) is myotodont, with the postcristid connecting hypoconid and entoconid. Braincase delicate and elongated; sagittal crest and lambdoidal crests are absent or very low; the occipital region is rounded and projects beyond the posterior limits of the occipital condyles; mastoid processes weakly developed. Frontal bone slightly sloping; rostrum comparatively short and narrow.</p>
          <p>Considering species from the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group (<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="armiensis">armiensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="elegans">elegans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="keaysi">keaysi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="midastactus">midastactus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic>moratellii</italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pilosatibialis">pilosatibialis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="simus">simus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), and species from the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group in the South American southern cone (<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="chiloensis">chiloensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dinellii">dinellii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="izecksohni">izecksohni</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lavali">lavali</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="levis">levis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nigricans">nigricans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> can be distinguished from all by the set of diagnostic traits reported above.</p>
          <p>These specimens of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> were originally identified as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and this identification was maintained by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">LaVal (1973)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">López-González et al. (2001)</xref>. In fact, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> resembles <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, but it can be distinguished by its smaller skull (<abbrev xlink:title="greatest length of skull" id="ABBRID0E1BBG">GLS</abbrev> &lt; 14.4 in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and generally &gt; 14.5 mm in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), braincase lower in lateral view, sagittal crest lower (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>), longer and bicolored dorsal fur with grayish base, tricolored ventral fur (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>), and presence of scattered hairs along the leg and dorsal surface of the uropatagium. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> have a higher braincase in lateral view, sagittal crest well-developed, shorter and unicolored dorsal fur, bicolored ventral fur and absence of scattered hairs along the leg and dorsal surface of the uropatagium.</p>
          <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> can also be confused with <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, but it can be easly distinguished by its smaller size (both external and cranial; <abbrev xlink:title="forearm length" id="ABBRID0E4DBG">FA</abbrev> &gt; 37.5 mm and <abbrev xlink:title="greatest length of skull" id="ABBRID0EBEBG">GLS</abbrev> &gt; 14.0 mm in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), skull more delicate, braincase lower in lateral view, mastoid processes less developed, dorsal fur longer and clearly bicolored with grayish base (unicolored in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), tricolored ventral fur (bicolored in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), and presence of scattered hairs along the leg and dorsal surface of the uropatagium (absent in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>).</p>
          <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> differs from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="armiensis">armiensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="keaysi">keaysi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pilosatibialis">pilosatibialis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> by its external smaller size (<abbrev xlink:title="forearm length" id="ABBRID0E3GBG">FA</abbrev> &gt; 36 mm in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="armiensis">armiensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="keaysi">keaysi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), more delicate skull, braincase lower in lateral view, sagittal crest lower, mastoid processes less developed, dorsal fur longer and clearly bicolored with grayish base, tricolored ventral fur, and pelage on the dorsal surface of the uropatagium composed of scattered hairs not extending beyond the knees. It differs from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="elegans">elegans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> by larger size in general (both external and cranial; <abbrev xlink:title="forearm length" id="ABBRID0EBIBG">FA</abbrev> &lt; 34.5 mm, <abbrev xlink:title="greatest length of skull" id="ABBRID0EFIBG">GLS</abbrev> &lt; 13.0 mm, and <abbrev xlink:title="braincase breadth" id="ABBRID0EJIBG">BCB</abbrev> &lt; 6.3 mm in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="elegans">elegans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), skull more robust in general, parietal bone not inclined forward, rostrum longer, dorsal fur clearly bicolored with grayish base, ventral fur tricolored. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> can be easily distinguished from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="simus">simus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="midastactus">midastactus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> by its smaller size (generally <abbrev xlink:title="forearm length" id="ABBRID0EYJBG">FA</abbrev> &gt; 36 mm and <abbrev xlink:title="greatest length of skull" id="ABBRID0E3JBG">GLS</abbrev> &gt; 13.5 mm in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="simus">simus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="midastactus">midastactus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), more delicate and narrower skull (<abbrev xlink:title="braincase breadth" id="ABBRID0EWKBG">BCB</abbrev> &lt; 6.8 in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and &gt; 6.8 in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="simus">simus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="midastactus">midastactus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), dorsal fur longer and clearly bicolored, ventral fur tricolored, dorsal surface of the uropatagium covered by scattered hairs that extend up to the knees; plagiopatagium inserted into the foot by a broad band of membrane.</p>
          <p>In comparison to species from the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> can be distinguished from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dinellii">dinellii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="levis">levis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> by the absence of a fringe of hairs on the posterior margin of the uropatagium, reddish dorsal fur bicolored with grayish base, and braincase less inflated. In addition, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> differs from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dinellii">dinellii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="levis">levis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> by its generally smaller size and comparatively shorter ears. It differs from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="izecksohni">izecksohni</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nigricans">nigricans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> by the braincase less inflated and reddish dorsal fur clearly bicolored with grayish base. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> can be distinguished from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="chiloensis">chiloensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from its smaller size in general, skull lower in lateral view, braincase less inflated, dorsal fur shorter and bicolored, with grayish bases and reddish tips. It differs from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lavali">lavali</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> by its second upper premolar (P3) smaller than first upper premolar (P2), and by its reddish fur with grayish bases (being blackish bases in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lavali">lavali</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>). In addition, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> can be distinguished of all species from the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group by its wooly fur (silky in <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-group species), ventral fur tricolored, and fur composed of scattered hairs on dorsal surface of the uropatagium.</p>

      <title>Discussion</title>
      <p>The specimens used for the description of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> were collected in 1963 during two expeditions in the Uruguayan Pampas, remaining identified as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> for more than half a century. This highlights the importance of taxonomic studies based on the review of specimens in museums for the knowledge of the species diversity on Earth.</p>
      <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> occurs near the boundaries of Uruguay with Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Argentina (Entre Ríos) and although individuals from grasslands of these two countries have not been examined, it is likely that the occurrence of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> will extend to outside the political boundaries of Uruguay. We believe that <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is endemic to the Pampa ecoregion, inasmuch as our taxonomic review of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>—which comprises more than 7,500 specimens examined—did not find evidence of the species in other South American ecoregions. If our hypothesis is correct, it is possible that <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (sensu <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Novaes et al. 2017</xref>), does not occur in the Pampa grassland plain.</p>
      <p>The localities where <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> occur are within the Pampas biome, an ecoregion with high biological diversity, with more than 3,000 species of plants, ca. 90 species of amphibians, 160 species of reptiles, 100 species of mammals, and more than 100 species of birds, including a very high rate of endemism (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Pillar et al. 2016</xref>). However, it remains as one of the least studied ecoregions in relation to the bat fauna (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bernard et al. 2011</xref>). Currently, the Pampas has suffered from the intensification of agricultural production, such that at least 30% of the entire biome has been converted into pastures and agricultural areas and there are very few protected areas (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Overbeck et al. 2007</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Pillar et al. 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Achka 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Botto-Nuñez et al. 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Souza et al. 2020</xref>). Although it is premature to determine the conservation status of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, this possibly endemic species should be monitored due to the anthropogenic pressure.</p>
      <p>The present taxonomic revision indicates the unequivocal occurrence of three <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species for Uruguay: <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="levis">levis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. All specimens of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="riparius">riparius</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from Uruguay analyzed in the present study were re-identified as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and, therefore, there is no evidence of the occurrence of this species in the Uruguayan Pampas. Recent literature points to the occurrence of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nigricans">nigricans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> in Uruguay (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Achaval et al. 2007</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">González and Martínez-Lanfranco 2010</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Botto-Nuñez et al. 2019</xref>). <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nigricans">nigricans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has been considered a species complex with a taxonomic puzzle far from being solved (e.g., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Larsen et al. 2012</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Moratelli et al. 2011</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">2013</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">2017</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">2019a</xref>). In the present review, we did not identify any specimen that fit morphologically into what is known as the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nigricans">nigricans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> complex from southern Brazil and Southern Cone (sensu <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Moratelli et al. 2011</xref>). Likewise, we found no evidence of the occurrence of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> in Uruguay and previous records (e.g., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Acosta y Lara 1950</xref>) are due to misidentified specimens of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="levis">levis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, as also suggested by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Botto-Nuñez et al. (2019)</xref>. However, we do not rule out the possibility of the occurrence of other <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species in Uruguay, considering that (i) we did not have the opportunity to examine specimens deposited in Uruguayan collections (e.g., Museo Nacional de Historia Natural del Uruguay), and (ii) a large part of the territory does not have satisfactory samples for bats (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">González and Lessa 2014</xref>).</p>
      <p>With the description of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pampa">pampa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, we recognized 23 <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">Myotis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species occurring in South America, including <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albescens">albescens</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (É. Geoffroy, 1806), <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ruber">ruber</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (É. Geoffroy, 1806), <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nigricans">nigricans</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (Schinz, 1821), <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Myotis">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="levis">levis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (I.
