        <label>Abstract</label>
        <p>In this work, a new species of the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is described from Guangdong, southern China. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. was recorded as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> for decades, and was indicated to represent an independent lineage based on recent molecular phylogenetic analyses. After detailed molecular analysis and morphological comparisons, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. is recognized as a distinct species which can be clearly distinguished from all known congeners by a combination of morphological characteristics and the significant divergence in the mitochondrial gene. Because the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is of high conservation concern and all formally described members are protected by law, we also provide first data on the conservation status and recommendations for IUCN categorization for <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. A suggestion on the species groups division of the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is also provided based on their morphological differences and phylogenetic relationships.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
      <p>The newt genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Anderson, 1871 contains 32 known species distributed in the mountain areas of southern and eastern Himalaya, southern and central China, and northern Indochina Peninsula (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Frost 2021</xref>). <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Unterstein, 1930, the second described species within this genus, was originally nominated based on two specimens collected by Prof. Shu-Szi Sin (= Shu-Zhi Xin) from Loshiang (= Luoxiang Town), Yao Shan (= Mt Dayao, Jiuxiu Yao Autonomous County), Kwangsi (= Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region), China (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Unterstein 1930</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Fan 1931</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Bauer et al. 1993</xref>). Subsequently, this species was widely recorded from multiple localities of China and Vietnam (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Liu et al. 1973</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B49">Zhao and Adler 1993</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Bain and Nguyen 2004</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Fei et al. 1990</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">2006</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">2012</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Nguyen et al. 2009</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Fei and Ye 2016</xref>).</p>
      <p><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Liu et al. (1973)</xref> firstly noticed the morphological variations among different recorded populations of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> in China, and suggested that detailed studies on this wide-spreading species are required. Afterward, based on the morphological differences, the populations in Hainan Island were proposed as an identical species <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hainanensis">hainanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Fei, Ye &amp; Yang, 1984, the populations in central China (Gansu, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, and Anhui provinces) were assigned to <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="wenxianensis">wenxianensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Fei, Ye &amp; Yang, 1984, and the populations in southern China (Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Guangdong and Guizhou provinces) and northern Vietnam were kept as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Fei et al. 1984</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">1990</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">2006</xref>). In recent years, the approach of integrative taxonomy combining morphological and molecular data has revealed that the recognition of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> should be a species complex with multiple paraphyletic lineages, and the populations from northern Vietnam have been described as different new species, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ziegleri">ziegleri</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Nishikawa, Matsui &amp; Nguyen, 2013, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pasmansi">pasmansi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Bernardes, Le, Nguyen, Pham, Pham, Nguyen &amp; Ziegler, 2020, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sparreboomi">sparreboomi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Bernardes, Le, Nguyen, Pham, Pham, Nguyen &amp; Ziegler, 2020, respectively (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Nishikawa et al. 2013a</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Wang et al. 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Bernardes et al. 2020</xref>). After these taxonomic revisions, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is currently known only from southern China (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Frost 2021</xref>). Nonetheless, the population in Mt Yunkai, Xinyi, Guangdong has been suggested to represent an independent lineage based on phylogenetic analyses using multi-locus of mitochondrial and nuclear data but without morphological comparisons (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Wang et al. 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Poyarkov et al. 2021</xref>). Besides, this population was surprisingly reported as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ziegleri">ziegleri</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> after a rough phylogenetic analysis without including any data of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hainanensis">hainanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and other recently-described congeners from Vietnam (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Li et al. 2020</xref>).</p>
      <p>In this work, we performed detailed morphological comparisons and molecular analyses on the “<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>” population from Mt Yunkai, Xinyi, Guangdong, China (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>, site 1), to clarify its exact taxonomic status. The results substantiate that the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> population from Guangdong should be a distinct species and can be distinguished reliably from all known congeners in morphology and phylogeny, especially from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from Guangxi, China (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>, sites 2–4) and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ziegleri">ziegleri</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from northern Vietnam (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>, sites 5–6). Therefore, we describe this <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> population from Guangdong as a new species below.</p>

        <title>Specimens and morphological analyses</title>
        <p>Four specimens of the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> were collected from Mt Yunkai, Xinyi, Guangdong. All specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formalin, later transferred to 70% ethanol, and deposited in the <named-content xlink:type="simple" content-type="institution" xlink:href="http://grbio.org/institution/zhongshan-sun-yatsen-university">Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University</named-content> (<bold><named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University" xlink:href="http://grbio.org/institution/zhongshan-sun-yatsen-university">SYS</named-content></bold>) and <named-content xlink:type="simple" content-type="institution" xlink:href="ttp://grbio.org/institution/chengdu-institute-biology-0">Chengdu Institute of Biology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences</named-content> (<bold><named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Chengdu Institute of Biology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences" xlink:href="ttp://grbio.org/institution/chengdu-institute-biology-0">CIB</named-content></bold>), PR China. External measurements were made for the unnamed specimens with digital calipers (Neiko 01407A Stainless Steel 6-Inch Digital Caliper) to the nearest 0.1 mm. These measurements are as follows: total length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="total length" id="ABBRID0EIPAC">TOL</abbrev></bold>) from tip of snout to tip of tail; snout–vent length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="snout–vent length" id="ABBRID0ENPAC">SVL</abbrev></bold>) from tip of snout to posterior edge of vent; head length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="head length" id="ABBRID0ESPAC">HL</abbrev></bold>) from jugular fold to snout tip; maximum head width (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="maximum head width" id="ABBRID0EXPAC">HW</abbrev></bold>); eye diameter (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="eye diameter" id="ABBRID0E3PAC">ED</abbrev></bold>) from the anterior corner to the posterior corner of the eye; snout length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="snout length" id="ABBRID0ECAAE">SL</abbrev></bold>) from tip of snout to the anterior corner of eye; minimum interorbital (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="minimum interorbital" id="ABBRID0EHAAE">IOD</abbrev></bold>) distance between the eyes; minimum internasal distance (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="minimum internasal distance" id="ABBRID0EMAAE">IND</abbrev></bold>) between the external nares; trunk length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="trunk length" id="ABBRID0ERAAE">TRL</abbrev></bold>) from gular fold of throat to anterior tip of vent; tail length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="tail length" id="ABBRID0EWAAE">TAL</abbrev></bold>) from posterior edge of vent to tip of tail; maximum tail height (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="maximum tail height" id="ABBRID0E2AAE">TH</abbrev></bold>); lower arm length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="lower arm length" id="ABBRID0EABAE">LLA</abbrev></bold>) from elbow to wrist; hand length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="hand length" id="ABBRID0EFBAE">HL</abbrev></bold>) from elbow to the tip of finger III; the third finger length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="the third finger length" id="ABBRID0EKBAE">F3L</abbrev></bold>) from base to tip of finger III; thigh length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="thigh length" id="ABBRID0EPBAE">TLH</abbrev></bold>) from groin to knee; tibia length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="tibia length" id="ABBRID0EUBAE">TIB</abbrev></bold>) from knee to tarsi; the third toe length (<bold><abbrev xlink:title="the third toe length" id="ABBRID0EZBAE">T3L</abbrev></bold>) from base to tip of toe III.</p>
        <p>The morphological comparisons for recognized congeners were attained from their original descriptions and latest revisions based on topotypic specimens (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Anderson 1871</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Unterstein 1930</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Fang and Chang 1932</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Liu 1950</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Fei et al. 1984</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Nussbaum et al. 1995</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Böhme et al. 2005</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Chen et al. 2010</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Stuart et al. 2010</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Hou et al. 2012</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Nishikawa et al. 2013a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">b</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">Yang et al. 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Le et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Phimmachak et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Fei and Ye 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">Qian et al. 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Grismer et al. 2018</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">Zaw et al. 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Bernardes et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Li et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Pomchote et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Poyarkov et al. 2021</xref>) and from the examination of museum specimens listed in Appendix.</p>
      </sec>
      <sec sec-type="Phylogenetic sampling and analyses" id="SECID0EDFAE">
        <title>Phylogenetic sampling and analyses</title>
        <p>Totally 11 liver samples of the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> were used in this study, encompassing four samples of the undescribed <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> specimens from Guangdong, four samples of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from Guangxi, one sample of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="broadoridgus">broadoridgus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Shen, Jiang &amp; Mo, 2012, one sample of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kweichowensis">kweichowensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Fang &amp; Chang, 1932, and one sample of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="maolanensis">maolanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Li, Wei, Cheng, Zhang &amp; Wang, 2020. All samples were attained from previously anesthetized and subsequently euthanized specimens and then preserved in 95% ethanol and stored at –40 °C.</p>
        <p>Genomic DNA was extracted, using a DNA extraction kit from Tiangen Biotech (Beijing) Co., Ltd. One mitochondrion gene, namely NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (<abbrev xlink:title="NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2" id="ABBRID0EFHAE">ND2</abbrev>), were amplified using the primers <abbrev xlink:title="NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2" id="ABBRID0EJHAE">ND2</abbrev>-4F (5′-TATGAGTACGAGCATCATACCC-3′) and <abbrev xlink:title="NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2" id="ABBRID0ENHAE">ND2</abbrev>-4R (5′-CTTCTGCTTAAGACTTTGAAGGTC-3′). PCR amplifications were processed with the cycling conditions that initial denaturing step at 95°C for 4 min, 35 cycles of denaturing at 95°C for 40 s, annealing at 53°C for 34 s and extending at 72°C for 60 s, and a final extending step at 72°C for 10 min. PCR products were purified with spin columns and then sequenced with both forward and reverse primers using BigDye Terminator Cycle Sequencing Kit from Applied Biosystems, on an ABI Prism 3730 automated DNA sequencer by Shanghai Majorbio Bio-pharm Technology Co., Ltd. All sequences were deposited in GenBank (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>).</p>
        <p>For phylogenetic analyses, 35 sequences from additional <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> congeners and 2 sequences of the out-group <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Echinotriton">Echinotriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Nussbaum and Brodie, 1982, were obtained from GenBank and incorporated into our dataset. Detailed information is provided in Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>. DNA sequences were aligned by the Clustal W algorithm with default parameters (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B43">Thompson et al. 1997</xref>). PartitionFinder2 was used to test the best partitioning scheme and jModelTest v2.1.2 was used to test the best fitting nucleotide substitution model. Sequenced data were analyzed using Bayesian inference (<abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian inference" id="ABBRID0ENIAE">BI</abbrev>) in MrBayes 3.2.4 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">Ronquist et al. 2012</xref>), and maximum likelihood (<abbrev xlink:title="maximum likelihood" id="ABBRID0EVIAE">ML</abbrev>) in RaxmlGUI 1.3 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Silvestro and Michalak 2012</xref>). Two independent runs were conducted in a <abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian inference" id="ABBRID0E4IAE">BI</abbrev> analysis, each of which was performed for 10,000,000 generations and sampled every 1000 generations with the first 25% samples discarded as burn-in, resulting in a potential scale reduction factor (<abbrev xlink:title="potential scale reduction factor" id="ABBRID0EBJAE">PSRF</abbrev>) of &lt;0.005. In <abbrev xlink:title="maximum likelihood" id="ABBRID0EFJAE">ML</abbrev> analysis, the bootstrap consensus tree inferred from 1000 replicates was used to represent the evolutionary history of the taxa analyzed. Genetic distances among samples were calculated in MEGA 6 using the uncorrected <italic>p</italic>-distance model.</p>

      <title>Results</title>
      <p>The <abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian inference" id="ABBRID0ERZAG">BI</abbrev> and <abbrev xlink:title="maximum likelihood" id="ABBRID0EVZAG">ML</abbrev> analyses resulted in identical topologies (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>). Most nodes were well supported with the Bayesian posterior probabilities (<abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian posterior probabilities" id="ABBRID0E4ZAG">BPP</abbrev>) &gt; 0.95 and the bootstrap supports (<abbrev xlink:title="bootstrap supports" id="ABBRID0EB1AG">BS</abbrev>) &gt; 70. The <italic>p</italic>-distances based on the <abbrev xlink:title="NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2" id="ABBRID0EH1AG">ND2</abbrev> gene among all samples used in this study are presented in Supplementary Table S1. As shown in the tree, five clades of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> were revealed. Within the clade IV (<abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian posterior probabilities" id="ABBRID0ES1AG">BPP</abbrev> 1.00, <abbrev xlink:title="bootstrap supports" id="ABBRID0EW1AG">BS</abbrev> 100), the samples from Mt Yunkai, Xinyi, Guangdong, China clustered into a monophyletic lineage with small divergence (<italic>p</italic>-distances 0.0–0.7%) and strong support (<abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian posterior probabilities" id="ABBRID0E31AG">BPP</abbrev> 1.00, <abbrev xlink:title="bootstrap supports" id="ABBRID0EA2AG">BS</abbrev> 100). This lineage is phylogenetically distant from <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from Guangxi, China and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ziegleri">ziegleri</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from northern Vietnam, but forms the sister taxon to <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hainanensis">hainanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from Hainan, China (<abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian posterior probabilities" id="ABBRID0EF3AG">BPP</abbrev> 1.00, <abbrev xlink:title="bootstrap supports" id="ABBRID0EJ3AG">BS</abbrev> 97).</p>

      <p>Morphologically, the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> specimens from this unnamed lineage can be distinguished from all known congeners reliably (details in the Taxonomic account below). Combining the results of the morphological examination presented below and the phylogenetic analyses in this and previous studies, the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> population from Mt Yunkai, Xinyi, Guangdong is regarded as a new species and described herein.</p>

          <p>The specific name <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton"/><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> refers to the outstanding biologist Prof. Shu-Szi Sin (= Shu-Zhi Xin, 辛树帜, 1894–1977). During his position at Sun Yat-sen University (1927–1931), Prof. Shu-Szi Sin organized repeated biology surveys throughout Guangxi, Guangdong, Guizhou, Hunan, and Hainan in southern China, pochally promoting the developments of zoological and botanic studies in this region. He collected specimens of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> for the first time, as well as other amphibians and reptiles such as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Quasipaa">Quasipaa</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="shini">shini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (Ahl, 1930) and the famous <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Shinisaurus">Shinisaurus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="crocodilurus">crocodilurus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Ahl, 1930. His family name “Sin” was mispronounced as “Shin” by the German researchers (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Beolens et al. 2011</xref>), and we decided to use the correct spelling for this new species as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. in honor of Prof. Sin and his contributions.</p>

        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="diagnosis" id="SECID0EMJBG">
          <title>Diagnosis.</title>
          <p>(1) Dorsolateral bony ridges on head low; (2) quadrate spines absent; (3) medium body size, <abbrev xlink:title="total length" id="ABBRID0ESJBG">TOL</abbrev> 118.4–124.5 mm in males, 144.5 mm in a single female; (3) snout obtusely rounded in dorsal view and rounded in lateral profile; (4) head longer than wide, <abbrev xlink:title="maximum head width" id="ABBRID0EWJBG">HW</abbrev>/<abbrev xlink:title="head length" id="ABBRID0E1JBG">HL</abbrev> ratio 0.87–0.95; (5) supratemporal bony ridges and the sagittal ridge on head distinctly visible; (6) limbs slender, tips of forelimb and hindlimb overlapping when adpressed along the body; (7) vertebral ridge distinct, relatively smooth, not segmented; (8) rib nodules 12–13, relatively small, distinctly isolated from each other; (9) ground coloration dark brown; (10) digits orange with irregular dark brown mottling; (11) in breeding season, rib nodules mottled with orange coloration, much brighter in the first two rib nodules; (12) in breeding season, lateral tail dark brown, fin with dorsal orange margin, ventral tail ridge orange.</p>
        </tp:treatment-sec>
        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="description" id="SECID0E5JBG">
          <title>Description of the holotype.</title>
          <p><named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University" xlink:href="http://grbio.org/institution/zhongshan-sun-yatsen-university">SYS</named-content> a008354 (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4A</xref>), adult male with a stout body, medium in size (<abbrev xlink:title="snout–vent length" id="ABBRID0ERKBG">SVL</abbrev> 62.0 mm, <abbrev xlink:title="tail length" id="ABBRID0EVKBG">TAL</abbrev> 56.4 mm). Head longer than wide (<abbrev xlink:title="maximum head width" id="ABBRID0EZKBG">HW</abbrev>/<abbrev xlink:title="head length" id="ABBRID0E4KBG">HL</abbrev> ratio 0.93); maximum head width slightly larger than the maximum trunk width; head nearly rounded hexagonal in shape in dorsal view, depressed, gently sloping in profile. Snout obtusely rounded in dorsal view, rounded in profile view, projecting beyond lower jaw. Nostril on anterior margin of snout, located notably closer to snout tip than to eye, with anterolateral orientation, not visible from dorsal view. Tongue oval, not notched distally; vomerine tooth series in an inverted ‘V’ shape, converging anteriorly but not reaching choanae. Parotoids distinct, large, crescentshaped, slightly projecting posteriorly. Dorsolateral supratemporal bony ridges on head wide, distinctly protruding, beginning at the anterior corner of orbit continuing to anterior end of parotoid, posterior ends slightly curved inside; sagittal bony ridge on head strong.</p>
          <p>Vertebral middorsal ridge distinct, wide, not segmented, running from occiput region to sacrum and the base of tail. Rib nodules distinct, relatively small, distinctly isolated from each other but arranged in two longitudinal series on dorsolateral surfaces of dorsum from shoulder to base of tail, counting 13 nodules on each side of body.</p>
          <p>Limbs slender, forelimb and hindlimb overlapping when adpressed towards each other along body; fingers and toes well developed, lacking webbing or fringes; relative finger lengths I &lt; IV &lt; III = II, relative toe lengths I = V &lt; II &lt; III = IV. Tail long, <abbrev xlink:title="tail length" id="ABBRID0EELBG">TAL</abbrev>/<abbrev xlink:title="snout–vent length" id="ABBRID0EILBG">SVL</abbrev> ratio 0.91; laterally compressed along entire length, tapering posteriorly, lateral grooves on tail distinctly visible in dorsal view.</p>
          <p>Skin of dorsum, flanks, and lateral sides of tail very rough with small granules and larger warts. Skin of head ridges and middorsal vertebral ridge relatively smooth. Skin of limbs with numerous tiny tubercles. Ventral surfaces relatively smoother, corrugated, with smaller granules arranged in transverse striations; throat with numerous tiny flat tubercles; weak gular fold present. Cloacal region slightly swollen, vent as a longitudinal slit, vent edges with numerous small transverse folds.</p>
        </tp:treatment-sec>
        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="Coloration of holotype" id="SECID0ENLBG">
          <title>Coloration of holotype.</title>
          <p>In life (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>), ground color of head, dorsum, lateral tail, limbs, and venter uniform dark brown. Rib nodules mottled with orange coloration, the coloration of the first two rib nodules much brighter. Dorsal skin of hands and feet excluding the digits dark brown. Digits orange, with irregular dark brown mottling. Tail fin with dorsal orange margin, ventral tail ridge orange.</p>
          <p>In preservative (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4A</xref>), ground color of head, dorsum, tail, limbs, and venter uniform dark. Orange coloration on all rib nodules fade. Orange coloration on the digits change into light brown. Ventral tail ridge pale yellow. Vent region pale yellow.</p>
        </tp:treatment-sec>
        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="variation" id="SECID0E4LBG">
          <title>Variations.</title>
          <p>Measurements of the type series are given in Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>. The single female paratype <named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University" xlink:href="http://grbio.org/institution/zhongshan-sun-yatsen-university">SYS</named-content> a008355 (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4D</xref>) possesses a larger and more robust body, however, its tail is relatively shorter, <abbrev xlink:title="tail length" id="ABBRID0EQMBG">TAL</abbrev>/<abbrev xlink:title="snout–vent length" id="ABBRID0EUMBG">SVL</abbrev> ratio 0.82 vs 0.87–0.91 in males. Both the male holotype <named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University" xlink:href="http://grbio.org/institution/zhongshan-sun-yatsen-university">SYS</named-content> a008354 (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4A</xref>) and the male paratype <named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University" xlink:href="http://grbio.org/institution/zhongshan-sun-yatsen-university">SYS</named-content> a004679 (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4B</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F5">5A</xref>) bear 13 rib nodules on each side of body, while only 12 rib nodules in the male paratype <named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University" xlink:href="http://grbio.org/institution/zhongshan-sun-yatsen-university">SYS</named-content> a008353 (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4C</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F5">5B</xref>) and the female paratype <named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Museum of Biology, Sun Yat-sen University" xlink:href="http://grbio.org/institution/zhongshan-sun-yatsen-university">SYS</named-content> a008355 (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4D</xref>). In life, all rib nodules mottled with orange coloration, and much brighter in the first two rib nodules in several individuals (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F5">5A</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F5">5C</xref>).</p>

          <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. was recorded as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> for a long time, but can be distinguished by the head longer than wide (vs head wider than long in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>), the snout obtusely rounded in dorsal view (vs truncate), the distal tip of limbs greatly overlapping when the fore and hind limbs pressed along the trunk (vs slightly overlapping or just meeting), rib nodules small and distinctly isolated from each other (vs rib nodules large, knob-like, and nearly in contact with each other), rib nodules with orange coloration (vs rib nodules completely black or brown), and tail fin with dorsal orange margin (vs completely brownish black).</p>
          <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. further differs from other congeners within the clade IV (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>) by the head longer than wide (vs head wider than long in <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hainanensis">hainanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="thaiorum">thaiorum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Poyarkov, Nguyen &amp;         <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="distribution" id="SECID0ESOAI">
          <title>Distribution.</title>
          <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. is currently known only from its type locality Mt Yunkai and the neighboring Mt Ehuangzhang (this study; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Hernandez 2018</xref>), both situated in the Yunkai Mountains of western Guangdong.</p>
        </tp:treatment-sec>
        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="natural history" id="SECID0EHPAI">
          <title>Natural history.</title>
          <p>This newt is terrestrial and inhabits leaf litters in well-preserved montane evergreen broad-leaf forest. During its breeding season from April to July, adult individuals can be observed in small ponds with muddy bottoms, small marshes, and vernal pools. Larvae can be found from June to August. On 15 August 2017, different stages of larvae were observed in the same vernal pool near the road (ca 2 m long and ca 3 m wide of the pool with water depth ca 4 cm), without adults observed (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F6">6</xref>).</p>
        </tp:treatment-sec>
        <tp:treatment-sec sec-type="Conservation recommendation" id="SECID0ERPAI">
          <title>Conservation recommendation.</title>
          <p>The extent of occurrence of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. is estimated to be less than 100 km<sup>2</sup>, and the area of occupancy is estimated to be less than 10 km<sup>2</sup>. Habitat degradation due to tourism development and illegal capture are the major threats. We recommend <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. to be listed as Critically Endangered (<abbrev xlink:title="Critically Endangered" id="ABBRID0ERQAI">CR</abbrev>) [IUCN Red List criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)]. This species must be added in the Appendix II of CITES, as the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> spp. are collectively included (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">CITES 2021</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China (2021)</xref> has declared that the species <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Yaotriton">Y.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>) is one of the Class II protected species of China, which was before the description of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. in this work. Therefore, the “<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Yaotriton">Y.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>)” being listed as protected species of China should include the Guangdong population (now <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov.). Thus, we suggest <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov. should be also regarded as protected species of China with at least Class II.</p>

      <title>Discussion</title>
      <p>The phylogeny of genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has been well studied on the basis of multi-locus of mitochondrial and nuclear data (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Wang et al. 2018</xref>). Subsequently, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Poyarkov et al. (2021)</xref> employed two mitochondrial segments and got a unanimous result. In this study, our phylogenetic result from the sole mitochondrial <abbrev xlink:title="NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2" id="ABBRID0EGWAI">ND2</abbrev> segment is consistent with the topology revealed in the above studies, suggesting that the <abbrev xlink:title="NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2" id="ABBRID0EKWAI">ND2</abbrev> gene is adequate for settling the phylogeny in the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>.</p>
      <p>After the taxonomic revisions in this work and previous studies (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Nishikawa et al. 2013a</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Wang et al. 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Bernardes et al. 2020</xref>), the species <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> can be confirmed to be present in Jiuxiu and Longsheng counties in northeastern Guangxi based on molecular data, while the taxonomic status for the populations from other localities such as northern and southwestern Guangxi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Mo et al. 2014</xref>) remain unknown and further studies are required. As the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> population from Guangdong is substantiated to be a new species <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sini">sini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> sp. nov., the records of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ziegleri">ziegleri</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> should be removed from the herpetofauna of Guangdong. Given our recent findings, another record of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ziegleri">ziegleri</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> from China (Malipo County, Yunnan), recently published by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">Ye et al. (2017)</xref>, should be re-examined whether it in fact represents the species that originally was described from northern Vietnam.</p>
      <p>The taxonomy for interspecific relationships in the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is controversial for decades (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B49">Zhao and Adler 1993</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Dubois and Raffaëlli 2009</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Fei et al. 2012</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Nishikawa et al. 2013a</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Fei and Ye 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Dubois et al. 2021</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Poyarkov et al. 2021</xref>), and several nomenclatures were proposed to accommodate different species, such as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Yaotriton">Yaotriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Dubois &amp; Raffaëlli, 2009, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Qiantriton">Qiantriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Fei, Ye &amp; Jiang, 2012, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liangshantriton">Liangshantriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Fei, Ye &amp; Jiang, 2012. In the nearest study, the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> was partitioned into two subgenera <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Yaotriton">Yaotriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and further into five species groups, based on the phylogenetic topology (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Poyarkov et al. 2021</xref>). Despite the phylogenetic separation of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Yaotriton">Yaotriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, the morphological characters for these two subgenera/genera remain unclear (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Nishikawa et al. 2013a</xref>). The five species groups are corresponding to the five robust clades in phylogeny (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Wang et al. 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Poyarkov et al. 2021</xref>; this work), while the morphological definitions for these five groups were not yet provided. Indeed, the morphological differences are unclear among some of these groups, for instance, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="maolanensis">maolanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is morphologically similar to <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> but phylogenetically close to <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="wenxianensis">wenxianensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pasmansi">pasmansi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="thaiorum">thaiorum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ziegleri">ziegleri</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> used to be morphologically identified as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="vietnamensis">vietnamensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> but phylogenetically close to <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. Furthermore, as a genus including 33 recognized species, we consider it is too overstaffed to partition <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> into both subgenera and species groups.</p>
      <p>Thus, after a comprehensive review on these species, we suggest to divide the genus <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">Tylototriton</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> into three species groups, which is most reasonable with their morphological differences and phylogenetic relationships. Below we provide a key for the three species groups with their morphological definitions. We further provide a key for the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group recognized in this work, which includes the former <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="asperrimus">asperrimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="wenxianensis">wenxianensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Tylototriton">T.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="vietnamensis">vietnamensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> groups in <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Poyarkov et al. (2021)</xref>.</p>
