Abstract
The syntypes of Silurus callichthys LINNAEUS , 1758 – type species of the genus Callichthys – are lost long time ago. Proper diagnoses of the genus and species within the genus Callichthys are impossible without the correct knowledge of the features of the type species. That’s why the designation of a neotype and the restriction of the locus typicus of Callichthys callichthys (LINNAEUS , 1758) was needed. This species is in South America widely distributed (from Suriname to Buenos Aires). Artificial mixed breeding groups of populations from Suriname, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina were used to test the fertility. All fishes were fertile up to F2 .
