Abstract
The type specimens of the Characiformes (Teleostei: Ostariophysi) of the Museum of Natural History of Berlin are listed, investigated and discussed. Each taxon is figured with his historical original picture (or a picture by the author of the original description from the same time), a lateral view and an x-ray picture. The South American specimens of the families Serrasalmidae, Acestrorhynchidae, Erythrinidae, Lebiasinidae are listed. There are type specimens of 35 taxa of these families. Type specimens of three taxa of these families are probably lost. In a next part of this publication the type specimens of true South American Characidae will be listed, investigated and discussed.
