Abstract
Hyphessobrycon margitae spec. nov. is described from the río Nanay drainage in Peru. H. margitae spec. nov. is characterized by its colour in life: a bright blue, dorsal and ventral not sharply bounded longitudinal band (vs. sharply bounded in H. peruvianus), beginning behind the head (vs. beginning on the tip of snout in H. peruvianus). The iris is silvery to golden, dorsal gray to black (vs. dorsal red in H. peruvianus). Finns reddish to strongly red in life, without any distal black marks in the anal fin (vs. distal black marks in the anal fin are developed in H. vanzolinii). The praemaxillary teeth are different in H. metae and H. margitae spec. nov. The latter has in the external row of praemaxilla two (1.84 (one to two)) tricuspid, broad, not compressed teeth (vs. 3.42 (three to four) tricuspid or broad conical teeth compressed in H. metae).
